This one of a kind wall hanger is built around the Nine Helms of Awe, a collection of Icelandic magical staves found in the manuscript Lbs 2413 8vo, dating to around 1800.
The manuscript presents nine variations of the Helm of Awe accompanied by the instruction: “These are the nine Helms of Awe that no one can be without who will handle knowledge and each one should be used 99 times.”
That instruction is incorporated directly into the construction of this piece. The Nine Helms are engraved into the pine base 98 times, with the final repetition hand painted in red across the blackened elk skull, bringing the total to 99 repetitions.
The contrast between the blackened skull, dark stained pine, dense field of engraved staves, and red painted symbols creates a piece centered around the historical magical text that inspired it.
