The serpent curls around the runes and bites its own tail, reflecting Jörmungandr's place in Norse mythology as the enormous serpent encircling Midgard.
Jörmungandr is one of the children of Loki and Angrboða. Odin cast the serpent into the sea surrounding Midgard, where it grew so large that it was able to encircle the world and grasp its own tail. Jörmungandr is also closely tied to Thor, with the two destined to face one another during Ragnarök.
